Seismological and Atmospheric Observatory Building
Christa G. von Hillebrandt-Andrade
Seismic Network Director
October 2004

During the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of Puerto Rico on September 18, 2004, after considering the report of its President on the inclusion of new projects in the Permanent Improvement Program and previous recommendation of the "Planta Física" Committee, it was decided to authorize the construction of the Seismological and Atmospheric Observatory Building in the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Two million dollars ($2,000,000) were assigned for the construction of the building. In addition to the offices of the Puerto Rico Seismic Network and the Strong Motion Network, additional space is contemplated for the Puerto Rico Climate Office and the Meteorology Network, also of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. The Observatory will also house a museum of natural phenomena, an amphitheater and small rooms for multiple uses. The total cost of the Observatory is around $6,000,000.

Assistance to the University Seismological Institute
Christa G. von Hillebrandt-Andrade
Seismic Network Director
October 2004

From September 27 through October 1, 2004, a delegation from the Puerto Rico Seismic Network (PRSN) and the Strong Motion Network, composed of Dr. Jay Pulliam, Dr. Víctor Huérfano, Mr. Juan Lugo, Dr. José Martínez Cruzado and Prof. Christa von Hillebrandt, traveled to the Dominican Republic. From September 27-30, assistance was given to the University Seismological Institute (ISU) of the Autonomy University of San Domingo (UASD) to repair some of their seismic stations installed, a system of real time data exchange between both networks and data collected for the September 22, 2003 earthquake and its aftershocks between the ISU, the Dominican Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) and the PRSN (permanent network as well as the temporary network that it operated in the Dominican Republic from October to December 2003). Also, meetings were held between colleagues of the Complutense University of Madrid and the Naval Oceanographic Institute of Spain to discuss a combined oceanographic expedition that will take place in March/April 2005. On October 1, the ISU organized the Seminar "Technological Advances in Seismology in the Caribbean." Dr Jay Pulliam, Dr Víctor Huérfano, Dr José Martínez Cruzado and Prof. Christa von Hillebrandt gave presentations. During the visit, future efforts were coordinated to install joint seismic stations in the Dominican Republic and real time seismic data exchange with the INDRHI.

Celebration of the Earth Science Week
Christa G. von Hillebrandt-Andrade
Seismic Network Director
October 2004

The Puerto Rico Seismic Network (PRSN) of the Department of Geology, University of
Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, joined the American Geological Institute (AGI) during the celebration of the Earth Science Week from October 11-15,2004, with the theme: Living on a Restless Earth.During the week, different groups were received in the PRSN facilities. A poster competition was held which was won by the student Jessica Báez Ortiz from the Elpidio H. Rivera School in Mayagüez. The activities culminated on Friday, October 15, with the celebration of an Open House in the Lobby of the Geology, Marines Sciences and Physics Building. The activity had 12 exhibits and 7 concurrent activities (visits to the Planetarium and the PRSN, a workshop on seismicity of the Caribbean, talks on Earthquakes and Geology and movies on Corals and Tsunamis). Approximately 500 people, including students and staff of schools from Hatillo, San Germán, Yauco, San Juan and Mayagüez and the university community took advantage of this opportunity to learn about different aspects of the Planet Earth.
