Seismicity in the Southeastern Region of Puerto Rico

Investigation

The region that consists of Guayama, Arroyo, Patillas and Cayey has experimented, since 2006, a significant increase (200%) in seismicity characterized by the occurrence of seismic swarms Due to this, the Puerto Rico Seismic Region has given a lot of effort towards monitoring, evaluating and attending the seismic activity in the area. With the purpose of evaluation the existing geologic conditions, we have realized various visits and field works since 2007 until the present. We have also realized a characterization and preliminary seismic investigation of the earthquakes that have occurred in the region. Preliminary results of this investigation were presented in the annal American Geophysical Union conference and the 25th annual Caribbean and Puerto Rico Geology Symposium.

Education

The seismicity in this zone highlights how important it is to be prepared in case of an earthquake. As part of strengthening earthquake education, the PRSN together with the Municipality of Guayama realized a community workshop in the Carite neighborhood of this municipality.

We hope that you take this opportunity to visit our Seismic Educational Program Page for more information about how to prepare for an earthquake. You can also read our guide (in spanish) about How to prepare your family for an earthquake.

Funds and Proposals

In the past we have focused our efforts in identifying and requesting funds to acquire the equipment necessary that allows us to do a detailed investigation about the geological, seismic and tectonic conditions that have caused the increase in seismic activity in that area. We're also focusing our efforts on an educational campaign in this region. We have submitted proposals to FEMA, NOAA and the Puerto Rico Senate. On Monday August 17th, 2009 the senator Santiago Gónzalez and Rivera Schatz presented a Joint Resolution in the Senate R. C. of the S. 206 (in Spanish) with the purpose of aquiring non recurring funds for the PRSN to realize our Investigation, Vigilance and Education about earthquakes in the Southeastern Region of Puerto Rico program.
